Lift technician: career guide and training

As a lift technician you install lifts, escalators, moving walkways and goods lifts, and you maintain and repair their mechanical, electrical, electronic, hydraulic and pneumatic parts.

What will you do?

You secure the work zone, take an installation out of service and check the safety devices before you diagnose a fault and repair it. You adjust the settings of components, guide clients when they start using the installation and tidy the site afterwards. The role is also known as lift fitter, lift maintenance technician or escalator technician.

  • Secure the work zone and take the installation out of service
  • Check the safety devices
  • Diagnose faults in the installation
  • Repair defects and adjust the settings of components
  • Guide clients when they start using the installation
  • Tidy the site and work safely
  • Work with respect for the environment

Skills to develop

  • Technical training in electromechanics or a related field
  • Reading electrical, hydraulic and mechanical schematics
  • Fault diagnosis and problem-solving skills
  • Head for heights and physical fitness

Your foundation for this occupation

Combine electrical fundamentals with mechanics and schematic reading. Understand how control, doors, drive and protective functions interact. For work involving electrical risks, the employer determines BA4 or BA5 authorisation for the tasks and installations concerned, considering knowledge, experience and instructions. Completing a course does not automatically grant that authorisation. Ask which site and safety training applies to your assignment.

From preparation to your first day

  1. Develop the practical skills

Shadow maintenance and fault diagnosis. Connect observations and fault codes to drawings, performing only assigned work within the safe work procedure.

  2. Check your work

After repair, check the specified functions and document the work. A reset without identifying the cause is not a complete diagnosis.

How can you grow?

Modernisation, complex faults and particular control systems offer specialisation. Service coordination also involves customer communication and maintenance scheduling.

Frequently asked questions

Is maintenance the same as a lift inspection?

No. Maintenance services the installation; inspection has a separate checking function. Ask which tests your employer performs and how findings are passed on.
